Wintercoats - Forest of Lovers (Southern Shores Remix)

Melbourne’s James Wallace writes delicate songs. His own Cascine Records wisely put him together with his Canadian labelmates for this stunning collaboration to close out their epic year of excellent releases. Ethereal and dreamtime - drift away.

disconaivete:

These are, in my humble opinion, the best EP’s released in 2011 - or at least the ones I enjoyed most. Please note that 2-track EP’s (Lana Del Rey, Purity Ring, Nicolas Jaar, Alex Winston, etc) are nowhere to be found in this list because one of the criteria for my personal list of EP’s is…

Thank you so so much. <3

SKETCHES - LYRICS

BLOOD PRINTS:

There’s no reason to get dressed up,
I will love you anyway,
Don’t be shy, or embarrassed,
I’d still proudly call your name,

But if I never saw you again,
I’d still think of you every day,
When my body starts to shut down from age,
I will speak of you fondly ‘til I pass away.

They say God loves all of his children,
But I wouldn’t be surprised if he loved you the best,
And I’d take all I’ve said, I would take all I’ve said,
And sign it in a letter with a blood print,
You only deserve the best.

FOREST OF LOVERS:
You’re come down,
Is the kindest fall I know,
Don’t be sorry, it’s the way something’s have to go,
Surrounded by the warmness of your tone,
But I can learn to adjust,
When it’s gone and I am on my own,
The wilderness of young love,
Is embedded and will always stay,
Some things you just can’t forget,
Some endings are not a mistake,

I will grow, I will nurse the earth,
Recreate, a forest I shared with you,
That flourished when shared with you.

WINDMILL:
I know nothing of the books you talk about,
Now my interest fades,
Feels like sunlights on my hearts exposed reel of film,
And it starts to decay,
Even if I try to speak to you the sentences all fall short,
It’s not a conversation if you’re the only one who talks,

I’m not lacking my devotion,
To keep this windmill still in motion,
But I know it’s not going strong,

You’ve done all the introductions but I don’t care about your friends,
A feeling all to overwhelming and I’m just to shy to content,
Now you can cover all your essence up in a thin veneer,
There’s nothing to you now,
No, there’s nothing really here.

THE SEA CHANGE:
Inspire is all you’ve done,
I could want for no other to share my time,
As the temperatures drop I find,
A loving warm body to lay beside,

Oh, you are some wonderful,
Who deserves something beautiful,
I know that you will find it,
And I hope you do.

The loving nature that I’ve been shown,
Keeps me feeling secure, safe, and warm.
Unlike all the others I have known,
You have given me a sea change and I thank you,
I’m honoured to even know you.

i-N session: Wintercoats

Wintercoats is James Wallace, the one man orchestra from Melbourne who makes simply stunning music using magnificently mastered instruments.

Preferring to go by the alias of Wintercoats, James Wallace is the ginger-haired, quietly spoken creative who gently weaves richly textured harmonies using a piano, some strings, a loop pedal and his voice. Retelling experiences and everyday encounters, his dreamy, washed-out sound is relaxing and feels effortless. Layering muted vocals over progressive, tide-like instrumentals, his lyrics are centred around his most intimate thoughts and feelings. Watching James perform is like reading the scribblings of a troubled soul’s diary. Provocative, candid and insightful, his abilities lie well beyond his years and he can quieten a room with a single chord. Recently releasing his first single Working On A Dream, James is niche label Cascines’ first ever signing. Exciting times. Currently working on his up-coming debut solo album, young Wallace is ambitious and excited about what lies ahead. i-D online can’t wait to hear more!
